Alabama Fast FactsInterested in Alabama real estate? Here are a few facts on Alabama.
Often called the Heart of Dixie, Alabama became the 22nd state on December 14, 1819. Alabama is the 30th largest state in the USA, covering more than 52,423 square miles of land. Alabama seceded from the Union, on January 1861, and on February 4, delegates from six states met at Montgomery and formed the Confederate States of America, with Montgomery as the capital. The name Alabama comes from an Indian word meaning "thicket clearers." As of 2000, the population of the state was 4,447,100 making Alabama the 23rd most populous state in the USA. Agriculture accounts for much of the industry in Alabama, with cotton, corn, peanuts, soybeans, poultry, and livestock being the state's main commodities. Some of the state's major rivers are the Tombigbee River, Alabama River, Tennessee River, and Chattahoochee River, with the larger lakes being Guntersville Lake, Wilson Lake, Martin Lake, West Point Lake, and Lewis Smith Lake. Bordering States are Florida to the South, Georgia on the east side, Mississippi to the west, and Tennessee on the north border.
